Fragrant Balsam Christmas TreeThe balsam Christmas tree has a very pleasant fragrance and is soft to the touch. It has short needles and sturdy branches making it easy to hang many ornaments on it. The balsam Christmas tree also holds its needles very well so we don't have the shedding problem that we experience with other short needle varieties.
We always cut down one of these trees and dad would try to shape it before bringing it into the house. However, The long needles made it difficult to hang ornaments. Since I have been married we have tried many varieties of trees, but the balsam Christmas tree is our favorite. Actually, one of our close friends introduced us to the lovely balsam Christmas tree. One time we were visiting them during the holidays, and we couldn't help but notice the distinctly wonderful scent in their living room. It was almost like we were out in the woods surrounded by pines. They then told us that it came from the balsam Christmas tree. From then on we fell in love with it and decided to use one ourselves the following holiday season. While we also like the looks of the blue spruce, it is so prickly that we would have to wear gloves while putting on the Christmas tree lights. Not many people realize and appreciate the work that goes into growing Christmas trees. The trees need to be planted, trimmed and harvested. Many of the farms plant a variety of trees because of the different rate of growth for each species. Because we live close to several of the tree farms, we have the privilege to go out and cut our own tree each year. However, we had never even thought of cutting a balsam Christmas tree. The tree growers are always looking for ways to make getting your
Christmas tree more enjoyable. Therefore, many of the tree farms offer a
shaker service as well as a bagging service for the trees that are cut.
First, they place the tree in a stand on an automatic shaker that helps
get rid of dead needles and other debris that may be in the freshly cut
tree. Next, they shove the tree through a barrel that has netting on the
end, which is then cut the length of the tree and tied on both ends. This
way, transporting the tree and getting it in your house is an easy task. Anyway, last year when we went to cut down our tree we were told that a new field had been opened for cutting. This field featured several Frasier firs and also the balsam Christmas tree that we were after. You see, the Frasier fir is supposedly the most aromatic of all evergreens and does not shed. We tried one a few years ago and liked the looks of the tree and the fragrance, but the branches are really soft. The soft branches could not hold some of the heavier blown glass Christmas ornaments that we have collected through the years. This meant that many of the ornaments that had the most meaning to us had to be placed in the inner branches, making them not immediately visible. We decided that because of this, we would not spend the extra money for a Frasier fir again. So, as you can imagine, we were thrilled to learn that we would be able to get a balsam Christmas tree last year, and we didn't have to travel very far from home for it. As we expected, it worked out perfectly. While the outside of our house was illuminated with Christmas light for house decor, our balsam Christmas tree stood elegantly in our living room, adorned with artistic glass Christmas ornaments and other beautiful decorations. And the scent was just heavenly. We felt like we were living in a magic castle. Not surprisingly, our friends and relatives who came visit were impressed, and many wanted a balsam Christmas tree of their own. If you have never had a balsam Christmas tree before, we highly recommend you give it a try. Most likely it will make your holiday season even merrier. And why not impress your visitors as well? We are certainly looking forward to cutting down our balsam Christmas tree again this year. Merry Christmas! Other items of interest
